Nigeria Shocks Egypt to Reach FIBA U-18 AfroBasket Semi-Finals After 14-Year Wait
Nigeria’s U-18 Women’s basketball team made history by defeating Egypt 66-51, securing a place in the semi-finals of the FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Pretoria, South Africa. This victory marks the first time in 14 years that Nigeria has reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
The win was particularly sweet for Nigeria after Egypt had previously beaten them 72-60 during the group stage. Egypt, a two-time U-18 AfroBasket champion and last year’s silver medalists, entered the game as favorites but couldn’t stop Nigeria’s determined performance.
Despite their long history in the competition, Nigeria has yet to win the tournament, with their best finish being a runner-up position. Meanwhile, Mali holds the most titles with eight, while Egypt, Senegal, and DR Congo each have two.
This tournament also acts as a qualification route for the FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup, adding even more importance to Nigeria’s historic win.
